Neutrogena hydro boost cleanser review

Want an in-depth Neutrogena hydro boost cleanser review? Here you go!

As someone who has combination skin that gets dry in the winter but oily in the summer, finding a cleanser that checks all the boxes can be tricky. Thankfully, I think I’ve found one that does it all.

I have loved Neutrogena ever since I was first introduced to it. Its oil-free, non-comedogenic, and lightweight formulation is what I was attracted to at first. I am a huge fan of its hydro boost range for my oily to combo skin.

And even though I stick to CeraVe cleansers for acne, I knew I needed a hydrating face wash to alternate between because my skin was feeling tight and dry. It was then I thought of giving the hydro-boost cleanser a try. I mean, I already love its moisturizer and the price is a bargain, so why not!

Keep on reading to find out why this is my new go-to for healthy and hydrated skin!

What is Neutrogena Hydro Boost famous for?

An honest Neutrogena hydro boost cleanser review

Neutrogena’s hydro boost line is well-loved for a few reasons.

  • Its hydro-boost moisturizer has no competition. It is blindly one of the best drugstore products for dry to oily skin types.
  • Neutrogena in itself is quite infamous for its affordability, hydrating products, great, irritation-free ingredients, and the best quality.

So it was obvious that its hydro boost cleanser was in the talks for the same as well.

Now, Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Cleanser is formulated with hyaluronic acid — an ingredient found naturally in our skin — which helps attract moisture and lock it in for long-lasting hydration. It also contains olive oil extract, which acts as an emollient to help keep your skin feeling smooth and moisturized throughout the day.

And finally, it includes glycerin — another hydrating ingredient — which helps draw moisture from the air into your skin, so you don’t have to worry about dry patches during colder months.

All that combined makes this product a must-have if you’re looking for an effective way to keep your face moisturized all year round!

What Does It Claim To Be?

As with every brand, this product also claims certain goody-good things for which it’s popular.

  • Innovative polymer technology creates effective and gentle cleansing.
  • Easy to apply and lightweight facial cleansing gel transforms into a silky lather that washes away dirt, oil, and bacteria and effectively lifts away makeup without stripping your skin.
  • Clinically proven to increase skin’s hydration level and lock it in.

What claims are true?

These might not be extraordinary claims for a hydrating cleanser, but they sure are something, especially at this price. So are these claims really true to the T?

I stand behind the effective and gentle cleansing one 100%. I have used this on normal days and with a full face of makeup and this face wash reminds me of Cetaphil – one of the gentlest brands on earth.

My skin doesn’t feel tight, as is the case with most cleansers, even CeraVe SA one.

However, I don’t think it really hydrates the skin after. I mean, not like the hydration you’d require on a daily basis. It’s just enough for your skin to not feel flaky or dry, but I won’t say that you’ll not need a layer of moisturizer after. Am I making sense?

Neutrogena hydro boost cleanser – ingredients and price

Coming to the ingredients, I must tell you that I am a huge fan of Neutrogena, the main reason being its gentle, irritation-free ingredients.

And it holds absolutely true for Neutrogena Hydroboost cleanser. Its ingredients include:

Water, Glycerin, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Sodium Hydrolyzed Potato Starch Dodecenylsuccinate, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Ethylhexylglycerin, Linoleamidopropyl PG-dimonium Chloride Phosphate, Polyquaternium-10, Polysorbate 20, Sodium Isethionate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Potassium Acrylates Copolymer, Sodium Chloride, Propylene Glycol, Disodium EDTA, Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Hydroxyacetophenone, Tocopheryl Acetate, Phenoxyethanol, Parfum

Of these, only three ingredients are not ‘known’ to be good and those are basically cleansing agents that you’ll commonly find in most cleansers.

But it’s good to know that all the hydrating elements and antioxidants compensate well for that.

That being said, 230 ml of hydro boost cleanser retails for $10. I think the quantity is decent and experience well-justifies the price. It does last a long time, though!

Oh, the packaging has changed, so don’t worry if you see the newest version everywhere and can’t find this particular one.

How to use Neutrogena Hydro Boost cleanser?

Water-gel consistency

Oh yes, there’s absolutely a right way of using a cleanser. You cannot apply, lather, and rinse and wish for the product to work wonders on your skin.

Here’s how you should use Neutrogena Hydro Boost cleanser:

  • Wet face and hands with lukewarm water, obviously.
  • Pump cleanser into hands and work into a lather. 1 or 2 pumps would be more than enough.
  • Massage lather onto the skin with a gentle, circular motion. And then keep it for 30-40 seconds (the crucial step). I like to massage the cleanser at that time.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft towel. Do not rub it harshly.

My experience using Neutrogena Hydro Boost cleanser

This is how it lathers

I’m always on the lookout for new skincare products to try—especially when they come with great reviews, like Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Cleanser.

After using it for just a couple of weeks, I was hooked! I am a combination skin type – oily in summer and dry in winter. This is the best face wash for winter, but I like something stronger for summer, like CeraVe SA cleanser for acne.

Coming back, this cleanser has a water gel consistency, which, if you don’t know, is better for oily, acne-prone, and sensitive skin types than cream ones and won’t really harm dry skin.

One of the other things that I love about this cleanser is its scent. It’s so subtle and pleasing. I cannot think it could irritate anyone but if you’re extra sensitive to fragrance, consider this a warning that it does have added parfum to it.

Okay, but how does it feel on my skin?

It leaves my skin feeling soft and hydrated without any greasy residue. Plus, its gentle formula is perfect for sensitive skin and won’t strip away any natural oils. That said, it still manages to get rid of dirt and impurities without being harsh or drying out my skin.

Keep in mind that it won’t lather too much (which is always a bonus), so don’t try to rub it vigorously.

Pros and cons of Neutrogena Hydro Boost cleanser

Pros of Neutrogena Hydro boost cleanser:

  • A gentle cleanser that is suitable for all skin types.
  • Contains hyaluronic acid, which helps to hydrate the skin.
  • It is non-comedogenic, meaning it will not clog pores.
  • Soap-free, oil-free, and paraben-free.
  • It is also hypoallergenic.
  • The cleanser is affordable and widely available. You can buy it here on Amazon or Ulta. It somehow is expensive on Ulta, IDK why.

Cons of this cleanser:

  • The scent of the cleanser may be too strong for some users.
  • The texture of the cleanser may be too thick.

Overall, pros>>>>>cons, so I am team Neutrogena Hydro Boost! I cannot say enough things about its moisturizer, and this cleanser has also swooned me away with its gentleness and effectiveness. It is indeed a good option for those with normal to dry skin looking for a gentle, hydrating cleanser.
