I wish acne were a little easy. I mean just a little bit. Because when you think you have dealt with those red pimples, they leave behind a huge dark pink-blue colored scar that looks even worse.
But if it is any consolation, acne scars on the face, chest and back are pretty common. So most people who get acne will be prone to acne scars and there’s nothing to be ashamed of. It is just a sign of the body’s natural healing process after a wound. And don’t worry, you can get rid of acne scars if you wish to.
Now it may take a little time, but it is so worth it. So let’s find out what natural remedies can help you get rid of acne scars.
Quick Disclaimer: These remedies are absolutely safe, non-comedogenic (which means they won’t be responsible and cause more pimples), and actually work. You can mark my words for it. But first, let’s know the core reason behind your scars. Because as I say, every solution starts from the cause.
What causes acne scars?

I’ll explain it in the easiest way and it indeed is important to know what kind of scars you have to see if you need home remedies for acne scars or a visit to a dermatologist.
Now acne is of two types: Non-inflammatory whiteheads and blackheads and Inflammatory pustules, nodules, and cysts. The inflammatory acne types leave acne marks or scars after their visit.
When the acne pore swells and a rupture occurs in the pore wall, that is when scars occur. Now some scars may be minor, leave brown spots behind, and heal within weeks with the help of the skin’s production of new collagen fibers. But, at the same time, some acne breakdowns may cause more significant, deeper scars, usually seen as pits or raised acne scars (depending on the amount of collagen produced).
The smaller dark spots kinda scars can very well be treated at home and these DIY home remedies will take care of them. But if you are experiencing raised acne scars or pits after acne, it’s probably due to nodules and cysts that need to be treated by a professional, or else you’ll ruin your skin.
And please don’t try DIY remedies on tough acne scars. You never know what will worsen the condition.
Quick Disclaimer: Acne scars normally take 3-6 weeks to disappear and sometimes more if the scars are bigger or darker. But don’t leave it on your skin, because if you don’t do anything about them, they’ll probably stick with you for 3-6 months. Yes, months!
the best home remedies for acne scars everrrr!
1. Honey + lemon juice
Honey is by far the best home remedy for acne scars. Known to increase the rate of healing of a wound and decrease the scarring, honey can help fight acne and reduce acne scars incredibly (supported by research). In addition, it has an enzyme in it that contains hydrogen peroxide, which is excellent for getting rid of dark spots and acne scars.
Even though honey can be used alone to fade away acne scars, I love fastening the process by adding a little lemon juice to it. The natural bleaching properties of lemon help to lighten the scars that are a significant plus for us.
Also, this honey + lemon juice mix is great for getting rid of pimples fast as suggested in this post.
How to use honey and lemon for acne scars? Add 5-6 drops of lemon juice to a tablespoon of honey. Apply just on the pimples after cleaning your face. Leave it overnight or at least 30-60 minutes, as you wish. Repeat once a day or every other day.
Lemon can be a bit drying and harsh on the skin if applied directly but when mixed with honey, you can reap the moisturizing benefits of it, hence making the duo a godsend remedy for acne scars.
2. black seed oil
Buy cold pressed black see oil / Buy black seed oil capsules
If Cleopatra or Nefertiti had acne scars, they would have probably used black seed oil to get rid of them, lol, it is that old. It helps your skin fight acne with its anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties and is seriously one of the best natural remedies for acne scars as compared to harsher ingredients like benzoyl peroxide that may strip your natural skin barrier.
Oh and did I mention that studies suggest that black seed oil is just as good as benzoyl for acne or scars? Now I did.
It helps tremendously speed up the scar healing process, reduces pigmentation after scars to give skin an even tone, and kills acne’s prospects.
How to use it? You can directly apply the oil as a spot treatment or can ingest it in the form of capsules. Leave it for 15-20 minutes and then wash it off. No, it is not comedogenic and won’t clog your pores or cause acne.
3. aloe vera + tea tree oil
Buy organic aloe vera gel / Buy tea tree oil
One of the best and my favorite duo is this one. I love aloe vera gel for its countless beauty benefits especially fighting acne, soothing inflamed skin, and getting rid of dark spots and acne blemishes. It contains polysaccharides and gibberellins that help boost the skin’s healing power and even out your skin’s complexion. The antioxidant properties in it help repair damaged skin cells and boost collagen production.
And who doesn’t love tea tree oil? I mean, it is one of the top Ph.D. holders in fighting acne. It has antiseptic, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties that can help prevent acne and soothe inflamed ones in 1-2 nights.
Now aloe vera gel alone can have wonders for acne and its scars when mixed with tea tree oil, the mix can help prevent the skin from more severe pimples that can cause acne scarring. Also, don’t experiment with using tea tree oil alone. You may not see immediate reactions, but it sure is very strong and drying for your skin in the long term.
How to use it? Mix 2-3 drops of Tea tree oil with half a spoon of aloe vera gel and apply the combo directly as a spot treatment on a clean face. Leave it overnight for at least 30-60 minutes if you want toes. Fresh aloe vera gel would be much better if you have the plant.
4. shea butter
If you don’t know, Shea butter is full of vitamins and essential fatty acids, which makes it one of the best products for UV protection and collagen production. There is no doubt that shea butter is literally the top moisturizer for our skin, but along with that, it also has anti-inflammatory and quick healing properties that work in favor of acne scars.
It is great for evening out skin discoloration and leaving you with clear skin. It is even proven to be more effective than store-bought moisturizers for lightening acne scars.
How to use Shea butter for acne scars? The first thing you have to keep in mind is to use raw sea butter, which is free of chemicals and added preservatives. Now you can use it in two ways. First, you can massage a small amount of shea butter onto your clean face covering all the trouble areas. Another one would be to use it as a spot treatment with the help of a Q-tip. Don’t worry, Shea butter is not comedogenic. It has a rating of 0-2 which means it will rarely clog anybody’s pores and cause pimples.
Also, try using it at night because then it will team up to heal your skin and regenerate skin cells overnight.
5. rosehip oil
This might be one of the “what are you talking about” home remedies for acne scars, but just for some information, Rosehip oil is jam-packed with vitamins and essential fatty acids and is a rich source of vitamin C which we all know works wonders for skin pigmentation, discoloration, and collagen production. This helps reduce the appearance of acne scars. And I’m not just saying it, it is well researched and proven.
How to use it? Rosehip oil can do much more than calm down and acne and fading what it leaves behind. So my favorite way to use it is to apply it as a facial oil after cleansing. It is non-comedogenic so you should not have any problem.
How do you prevent acne scars?

They are certain habits that you might be doing on a daily basis that, unfortunately, are increasing the chances for your acne to leave scars behind. And it is much harder to deal with acne scars than with pimples, so if you could try and prevent them in the first place, your skin will thank you from its’ heart (if it has one, lol).
1. skipping sunscreen
We know that you should be using sunscreen every single day. But how can it affect your acne scars? Apparently, acne treatments make the skin more sensitive to UV rays, making your skin likely to scar and heal slowly. So that’s why skipping sunscreen can make things worse. And it takes 2 minutes, babe, don’t avoid it! This wonderful sunscreen is your best bet.
2. popping pimples
Oh, I know how tempting and juicy those pimples look and how hard it is to resist not popping. But, unfortunately, popping pimples can spread an infection to other tissue and worsen the inflammation, causing scarring and skin damage. Instead of this, you can apply a spot treatment or pimple patch to let the pimple heal itself quickly.
3. not removing makeup before bed
You know that makeup is not your best friend if you have acne. It probably is a distant acquaintance. Leaving makeup and all the dirt and oil overnight could clog your pores and keep your skin from going through its usual regenerating process while you sleep. So better cleanse our face every night religiously.
4. not washing face with the right cleanser
Cleansing your face is by far the most important step in your skincare routine. And choosing the right cleanser for your skin is one of the crucial tasks. So if you are struggling with acne and scars, a salicylic acid face wash is probably your best bet. I swear by this magical one and would strongly recommend this.
5. not treating acne asap
The first thing to do is treat acne as soon as you get it. Start with some DIY acne treatments to get rid of them fast but consult your doctor immediately if you think they are not working. How preventing acne in the first place helps with acne scars because you don’t allow the acne to get severe and leave bigger, darker spots.
