Dandruff can be a very frustrating condition to live with, especially when it is severe. Itchy, flaky scalp is not only uncomfortable, but it can also be embarrassing. In some cases, dandruff can lead to more serious problems such as scalp infections, greasy patches on the scalp, and even hair loss, which is not a pretty picture.
To get rid of dandruff fast, there are a number of tips and home remedies you can take that actually work and are not a waste of time. But first of all, find out what are the causes for your dandruff so you can prevent that from happening again.
Causes of dandruff
The following factors may contribute to dandruff:
- Irritated, excessive oily scalp
- Dry scalp (not well-hydrated)
- Sensitivity to hair care products
- Malassezia (yeastlike fungus), which feeds on oils in the scalp of adult susceptible people
- Other skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema
home remedies to get rid of dandruff
1. tea tree oil
Tea tree oil is literally a magic potion for any kind of bacterial or fungal infection. So it will help fight Malassezia, which is a dandruff-causing fungus. One of the simplest ways to use tea tree oil for dandruff is to add 5-8 drops of tea tree oil to your shampoo and lather it while washing your hair.
Another easy way to use it is by adding a few drops to coconut or olive oil and massaging it thoroughly on your scalp. Keep it on for about 2-3 hours and then wash it with normal or special anti-dandruff shampoo.
Remember, tea tree oil can be a little harsh on the sensitive scalp due to its strong ingredients. So always do a patch test first and if the scalp is sensitive, never apply the oil directly onto the scalp. Always dilute it in other carrier oils or water before using it.
2. coconut oil
What is it that coconut oil doesn’t do? I mean, it’s a solution for most skin problems, dandruff including. Coconut oil works if you want to get rid of dandruff naturally because it penetrates deep into the scalp and moisturizes it and hydrates the dry skin, which is one of the main reasons for dandruff.
It also has anti-microbial properties which help prevent eczema and flaky scalp.
Just massage hot coconut oil into the scalp for 2-3 hours before washing your hair for best results. You can even add other essential oils to it to make it more effective.
3. apple cider vinegar
I love ACV for back acne and dandruff. Firstly, it’s easy and secondly, it’s an instant way to treat dandruff.
You only need to mix equal parts of water and apple cider vinegar and spray or rinse your hair with it. Shampoo it after 30 minutes and see the results for yourself.
This is my mom’s favorite way to reduce dandruff naturally and fast.
Yogurt is a natural remedy for dandruff that people have been using for decades. It is an antibacterial and antifungal agent that can fight the bacteria and fungus on the scalp.
Wash your hair with a mild shampoo first. Then apply yogurt to your scalp and leave it on for about 20 minutes before rinsing it off with water. It’s recommended to do this at least once a week, but doing it more often may provide better results in preventing dandruff outbreaks.
Also, it makes your hair soft and shiny as well!
5. lemon juice
Another effective way to get rid of dandruff is to add a few drops of lemon juice to either coconut oil or yogurt and apply the mixture before washing your hair.
It can fight yeast growth on the scalp and also maintains the scalp’s pH level, eliminating future dandruff-causing yeast as well.
Do not even try using lemon juice directly on the scalp as it is very acidic and causes instant irritation.
6. onion juice
Who doesn’t know the magical properties of Onion juice for all sorts of hair problems? It is a great natural remedy for getting rid of dandruff. It contains sulfur which has anti-fungal properties. You can use it by rubbing it on your scalp or using it in a hair rinse.
Of all the above remedies, this is the one I have tried the least but it works amazing. The salicylic acid helps loosen the dandruff flakes so they can be removed easily with 1-2 washes.
You just need two crushed aspirin tablets and mix them in water and apply them onto the scalp, leave it on for 5 minutes max, and then wash it off with clarifying shampoo.
Or mix 2 crushed aspirin tablets in shampoo before washing. Both the ways work!
8. neem oil
Neem oil has been an age-old remedy in Indian households to prevent hair loss and most scalp problems. Neem oil has antifungal properties, and it is effective against dandruff-causing Candida and Malassezia. It also reduces inflammation, itching, and irritation caused by dandruff.
In order to combat dandruff, Neem oil should be applied regularly. This maintains the pH balance in the scalp and prevents the production of dandruff.
tips to get rid of dandruff fast
Along with these home remedies, there are other useful tips to get rid of dandruff fast. Because no problem can be just topically. There have to be some internal changes that are a cause.
1. eat more probiotics
Probiotics are good bacteria that are helpful for your gut and body health. In addition to enhancing immune function, probiotics may also hinder the growth of fungal infections that cause dandruff.
You can consume these probiotics in the form of supplements for a quick dose or from fermented food like tempeh, sauerkraut, natto, kombucha, and kimchi (which is what I prefer).
2. wash your hair regularly
By this, I mean that you must wash your hair at least twice a week. That’s just enough for keeping dead skin cells, dirt, and oil at bay along with dandruff.
If your scalp doesn’t produce much oil and you only need to wash it once a week, that’s perfect as well. I’m not suggesting overwashing your hair, just keeping a regular washing schedule.
3. drink a lot of water
Drinking a lot of water will not only ensure that your scalp is well-hydrated so dry dandruff flakes don’t happen but also keep stop excess sebum production from skin and scalp.
4. avoid using hair sprays/gels
If you already have an oily scalp, you’ll want to limit the use of styling products such as hair sprays and hair gels as much as possible. These products can cause dandruff, flakes, and itchiness on your scalp.
5. manage stress levels
Stress may not be a direct cause of dandruff, but it sure aggravates the dryness and itchiness even more.
Not only that, when you are stressed for too long, your immune system may become weakened, which can impede your body’s ability to remove fungal infections and conditions that cause dandruff naturally.
So trying yoga, meditation or other stress-relieving activities can in some way help you get rid of dandruff fast.
6. switch to special shampoos
Switching to anti-dandruff clarifying shampoos is by far the easiest way to get rid of dandruff in 1-2 washes. Ingredients like salicylic acid, zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, and selenium sulfide make these shampoos so effective that you may not even try any other stuff.
But the problem with this is that it doesn’t eliminate the problem from the root. But that goes with all-natural home remedies for dandruff as well.
Until and unless you cut the cause of dandruff, topical remedies cannot guarantee success and a clear scalp. Here are some of the better anti-dandruff shampoos.
wrapping up how to get rid of dandruff
Dandruff is one of the most common problems that almost 50% of human beings have had at least once. So there’s nothing to be embarrassed about. If you want a quick way to get rid of dandruff, the above-mentioned home remedies are the way to go. My personal favorite is yogurt and tea tree oil.
But if you have time, try the anti-dandruff shampoos of your choice.
