Hyaluronic Acid – Is it a Magical Potion?

how to use hyaluronic acid serum

As much as beauty experts try to pose hyaluronic acid as something magical and miraculous, let me tell you, babe, it is not! If you don’t know about this acid from the inside out, there are chances that it will do more harm to your skin than good.

Basically, hyaluronic acid or HA, is a significant skincare ingredient that works wonders to keep your skin hydrated. In fact, the molecules of this acid can attract water from the environment and keep your skin moisturized and plumpy.

As a result, your skin looks youthful, sans all the fine lines and wrinkles. This is precisely the reason that even skin fillers leverage hyaluronic acid to such a huge extent.

Yes, there are a lot of benefits of using hyaluronic acid, which I’ll share later but let’s just get started with how to use and layer hyaluronic acid for now!

Here comes the million-dollar question – What is the correct way to use hyaluronic acid?

how to apply hyaluronic acid serum

Hyaluronic acid can bless you with your dream skin, but only if you use this miraculous ingredient the right way.

Here’s exactly I have been using this skincare wonder for the last four months to get the best results!

Step 1: cleanse your face with a good cleanser

As it goes without saying, to begin with, for any skincare product, you got to have a clean surface that is ready to absorb all the goodness of your products.

Step 2: Use a hydrating toner if you like

You know, I don’t feel too good about using a toner if it isn’t jam-packed with gorgeous ingredients like the Pixi glycolic acid toner. But if you’ve been using and loving a good one, spritz it a little, and don’t wait for your skin to absorb it completely. You want damp skin to use hyaluronic acid effectively.

Also, make sure you don’t use anything that won’t go well with HA, like AHAs, BHAs, or anything else mentioned below. This is why I absolutely love to use rose water, as it’s safe and hydrating!

Step 3: Dampen your face before applying hyaluronic acid

Once you have cleaned your face and toned it, do not wipe your face with a towel or napkin. Keep it somewhere between damp and wet.

Now, apply a few drops of hyaluronic serum on your already-moist skin and gently rub it all over the face slowly. You can even use light finger-tapping motion. Give it a few moments to get absorbed deep into the skin layers.

Step 4: Use a hydrating moisturizer for noticeable results

Yes, even after using a HA serum, you must use a moisturizer to seal everything in. HA is basically a humectant, which means it attracts moisturizer from your environment and keeps it inside your skin. So a moisturizer over HA serum would only double the effect and keep your skin hydrated for a far longer time.

Step 5: Layer it with suitable ingredients for heightened results

Do not just stop at hyaluronic acid application to your skin. Layer it up with a moisturizer or facial oil and sunscreen. Remember that hyaluronic acid is a team player and can offer its best when accompanied by its teammates. It’s as easy as that!

Just make sure you don’t mix your hyaluronic acid with any other skincare actives that don’t jell along so well.

When to use Hyaluronic acid serum?

how to layer hyaluronic acid serum

Considering how delicate and effective it is, you can use hyaluronic acid in both morning and evening skincare routines, especially if you are dry to very dry skin types. This ensures moisturized skin all day and night and quick results in less time!

How often should you use hyaluronic acid?

Just because it is good for your skin does not mean that you will go overboard applying hyaluronic all over your face. Just apply a few drops of serum on your cheeks, forehead and chin and rub them in with your fingers slowly.

You may also read the instructions on the label to get more clarity.

Is it okay to use hyaluronic acid on your skin every day?

Of course, darling! You can and should use hyaluronic acid every day on your skin to get effective results in a small span of time. It is a skin-friendly ingredient and enhances your overall skin when used on a regular basis.

What not to mix with hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is great for moisturizing the skin, but when it comes to pairing up products, there are a few no-nos. You don’t want to mix HA with retinol and vitamin C, as this concoction can be too harsh on your skin.

For those with sensitive complexions, look out for exfoliating acids such as glycolic and salicylic as well; they don’t mix well with hyaluronic acid! That way, you’ll get maximum moisture without any unwanted redness or breakouts.

What should I apply after hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is usually a safe bet because it’s just a naturally occurring substance in the human body. However, you need to apply a good hydrating moisturizer immediately after your HA to lock moisture into your skin for a long time.

Can I just use hyaluronic acid as a moisturizer?

can i replace Hyaluronic acid as moisturizer

Umm, now this question may be up for debate, but I personally won’t recommend that.

Yes, you can use the hyaluronic acid serum as a replacement for a moisturizer. However, it is important to understand that the hyaluronic acid in the serum has smaller molecules, so it may be better suited for deeper and more targeted hydration. It should be used in addition to a regular moisturizer to ensure maximum hydration benefits.

How long should you let hyaluronic acid sit before moisturizer?

You must wait until the HA serum is absorbed entirely into the skin. So a minute or half would be enough time before you go in with a moisturizer.

Which is better, retinol or hyaluronic acid?

Now I have a complete post on differentiating between retinol and hyaluronic acid but in short…

It depends on your skin type and what you’re looking to achieve. Generally speaking, retinol is a form of vitamin A that works to reduce wrinkles and acne by increasing cell turnover. It can cause dryness, so it’s important to also use a moisturizer when using it.

Hyaluronic acid is a moisturizing ingredient that helps keep the skin plump by binding moisture to the skin. Both ingredients can work together synergistically but depending on your skin type one may be more beneficial than the other.

Can I mix vitamin C and hyaluronic acid?

Yes, you can mix vitamin C and hyaluronic acid. The combination of these two ingredients is believed to help boost collagen production and reduce signs of sun damage, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.

However, it is important to note that both ingredients are very acidic, so it is important to use them with caution and monitor your skin for any reaction.

How to layer hyaluronic acid serum

If you want to add hyaluronic acid to your existing skincare routine, you have to ensure a few things: conflicts and layering.

Firstly, watch out for active ingredients like niacinamide, retinol, vitamin C, etc, and see if all of them jell along well with your beloved hyaluronic acid. Because wrong products will not only reduce the efficacy of the skincare but also can cause reactions and irritation.

Another thing is layering HA serum. So for that, keep in mind the golden rule of applying skincare in terms of consistency. You would want to apply the thinnest consistency product first and then layer over thicker products.

The correct skincare routine should look like cleanser < toner < antioxidant serum < eye cream < spot treatment < moisturizer < face oil < sunscreen.

Use HA serum in place of antioxidant serum in the above routine and then follow along with your other products.

Are there any side effects of using hyaluronic acid?

how to use hyaluronic acid serum

Nope! In my experience, hyaluronic acid is absolutely harmless.

I have been using these for months now, and if you ask me- so far, so good!

As I have said above, this acid occurs naturally in our body, and that’s why we rarely face any issues with applying hyaluronic acid to our skin.

However, if you experience itchiness or dryness on your skin, then it can be because of different concentrations of hyaluronic acid in your serum or moisturizer. In that case, you can stop using that particular product and consult a dermatologist for a better hyaluronic acid product.

Can You Use Hyaluronic Acid When Pregnant?

Yes, you can use hyaluronic acid when pregnant. However, it is important to speak with your doctor or dermatologist before using any skincare products, as certain ingredients may not be safe for expecting mothers. Additionally, it’s a good idea to stay away from retinol products while pregnant.
