With the chilly weather upon us, if you still don’t know what shoes to wear with a sweater dress, this one’s for you!
Fall is hands down the best season, no doubt about it. From the cool weather to the gorgeous leaves and pumpkin spice lattes, it’s pure magic. And, of course, we can’t get enough of fall fashion! There’s something about being able to layer clothing that just gets us excited.
One of my favorite fall looks is a sweater dress. It’s comfy, chic, and oh-so-easy to throw on when you’re in a rush. Plus, It’s the perfect way to transition your summer dresses into fall.
However, they are also a little tricky to wear. I mean, your outfit is incomplete without shoes, right? And what shoes to wear with a sweater dress is always up for a talk with my girlfriends. So I sorted this once and for all!
How to select Boots to wear with a sweater dress
There’s nothing like a pair of boots to make you feel put together and stylish, even when you’re just running errands or heading to the gym. And when it comes to pairing boots with a sweater dress, the options are endless!
First things first, we gotta consider the length of the dress.
If it’s a mini, go for some killer over-the-knee boots to elongate your legs and add some sass to your outfit. If it’s midi or maxi, ankle boots or booties are where it’s at.
Next, you’ll want to think about the vibe you want to give off.
Want a casual and comfy look? Throw on a chunky combat boot with your sweater dress. You’ll be cozy and cool all day long.
But if you’re feeling fancy and feminine, go for some heeled boots or boots with fancy details like embroidery or buckles.
Oh, and don’t forget about color coordination.
Black boots are always a safe bet – they go with everything. But if you want to bring some warmth and earthiness to your outfit, try some brown boots.
And if you want to really make a statement, go for white or grey boots (I also love the snake print ones as well 😉 They’ll add that pop of contrast that’ll turn heads.
Whatever route you choose, just make sure your boots look intentional—if they look like an afterthought, the whole outfit will fall flat. And no one wants that—especially when they’ve got a killer sweater dress on. Now onto the styles!
Examples of how to style a sweater dress with boots
1. knee high Boots
What do you do when you want to wear a sweater dress, but it’s too cold for bare legs? You reach for a pair of knee-high boots! Not only do they add some serious edge to your outfit, but they also pair perfectly with any sweater dress.
I gotta say, I love the way they make your legs look long and sleek, all while keeping you warm on those frosty days.
These boots aren’t just comfortable and versatile, they can be a total wardrobe staple. A good pair of brown, tan, or white boots can last you years of style and cute outfits!
But if you want to make a legitimate statement, I suggest trying snake or animal print knee-high boots and finding all the heads turning towards you!
Whether you’re headed to the office or out on the town, knee-high boots and sweater dresses are the ever-so-trendy combinations that can never get out of style!

Ankle boots are the perfect shoes to wear with sweater dresses to add some serious edge to the outfit while keeping things mellow & dainty. Not only will they keep your feet cozy, but they also give you a chance to show off your fabulous legs.

3. combat boots
These babies are way more versatile than you’d expect. Whether you’re rocking a mini, midi, or long dress, these bad boys can handle it all. They bring that perfect touch of edge to any outfit, making you look effortlessly put together.
Just make sure your boots are clean and polished and that they don’t have any scuffs or dirt on them. Dirty boots will tear down the whole outfit in a flash.

4. thigh high boots
Only if my favorite fall outfit had a face! I absolutely love wearing thigh-high boots. They give you an extra layer of warmth and cozy and also elongate your legs to look a mile long.
You can either choose a mini sweater dress or one that ends above your knees. In fact, you can also experiment with long sweater dresses. Have you not seen women wearing slouchy boots peeking through from a long sweater dress?

other types of shoes to wear with a sweater dress
Yes, yes, boots are the new black this fall, or every fall for that matter, but does that mean they are our only resort? Of course not! Here are some other types of shoes to wear with a sweater dress that’ll look oh-so stunning.
5. Flats
I mean, is there even a doubt here? Flats go with literally everything! You name it, and I’ll show you how.
They can add the perfect casual vibe to your outfit. Whether you’re running errands or going out with girls for brunch, throw a pair of sliders, and you’re good to go.
Yes, I specifically said sliders (like the ones from Hermes or Tory Burch) because flip-flops are a huge no-no unless you wanna look homeless. You could also add a belt to give the outfit some dimension and length.

6. Heels
If you are looking for a way to add extra sass to your outfit without sacrificing on looking fashionable, throwing on heels is always an easy answer.
Pumps, ankle straps, kitten, or open toe, most of the heel styles can go with a sweater dress. But wait, is it really that simple? I’ve got my doubts. 😏
The key is to choose a style that complements your dress’s proportions. If you’re rocking a fitted sweater dress, balance out the look with some chunky heels.
And if you’re sporting a loose-fitting sweater dress, add a touch of elegance with some sleek pointy-toe heels.
And of course, that is not a hard and fast rule, but it just looks more put-together that way!

8. Sneakers
I don’t know why people are so afraid to wear sneakers with sweater dresses. There’s nothing complicating here, babe. Sneakers look really stunning with all dress lengths, mini, midi, or long.
They’ll keep your feet warm and are easy to walk long roads in. The sneakers add a touch of sportiness to the look, while the sweater dress keeps it looking put-together.
By the way, you can wear all sorts of sneakers with your sweater dresses – trainers, converse, or high-top, but I am all for the chunky/platform sneaker look with these kinds of dresses. They give some height to the outfit and look ultra-chic on the streets.
If you want to keep the look more casual, try a denim jacket or an oversized cardigan. Finish off the look with a scarf or sunglasses.

9. mules
I know you might not have seen enough mules and sweater dresses, but it’s time we make our own fashion rules. Mules are one of the hottest trends this season, and I’m loving them!
They’re the perfect mix of casual and dressy, and they can be dressed up or down to suit any occasion. When paired with a sweater dress, they can really help to elevate your look.
If you want to keep your look casual, pair your mules with a slouchy midi sweater dress and add a denim jacket or cardigan on top. For a more dressed-up outfit, try pairing your mules with a form-fitting sweater dress and adding some sparkly jewelry.
You could also wear a belted sweater dress for a flattering and stylish silhouette. And if it’s chilly outside, don’t forget to throw on a cute coat or scarf to keep warm!
Give this trend a try next time you need an outfit for work, brunch with friends, or running errands. You’ll look chic and put-together without even trying!

10. Wedges
Were wedges ever out of style? I don’t think so.
Wedges are an excellent way to add a touch of style to any outfit, and they’re especially well-suited for sweater dresses. Not only do wedges help to elongate the leg, but they also provide extra stability and support.
And best of all, they come in a variety of styles and colors, so you’re sure to find a pair that’s perfect for your next big event.

11. Loafers
Loafers are a hit! No matter what the occasion, you can always find a pair that caters to your needs. I bet you’ll see a pair of chunky loafers in every fall fashion video on TikTok or Instagram.
They are comfortable and stylish, and they won’t leave your feet cold.
However, make sure your sweater dress must be knee-length or below to ensure that the shoes are visible. I haven’t seen mini sweater dresses over warm stockings work well with loafers.

12. ballerinas
It’s no secret that ballerinas are the perfect footwear for a sweater dress. They’re comfy, laid-back, stylish, and they just make you feel put together. But how do you wear ballerinas with a sweater dress without looking like you’re headed to the ballet?
First of all, choose a pair of ballerinas that complement your sweater dress. If your dress is light and airy, go for a pair of nude ballerinas. If it’s a little more structured, opt for black ballerinas.
Keep the rest of your look simple. Ballerinas can be dressed up or down, but if you’re wearing them with a sweater dress, you’ll want to keep the rest of your look fairly casual. A pair of jeans or leggings will do the trick.
