It is one of the most hyped skincare ingredients that has made its way to not only skincare but makeup and haircare as well.

And as someone who loves to try every new affordable skincare product out there, I knew I had to get my hands on this little magic potion and test it out for myself. And after using it religiously for 3 months now, I’m here to spill the tea on what makes it so great, how to use it to get the best results possible and where’s the catch!

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid, or HA, is a molecule naturally produced in our bodies to help keep our skin hydrated and supple. But as we grow older, our bodies produce less HA, leaving our skin thirsty.

The good news? Products with HA can quench that thirst! HA is a moisture magnet that plumps up those pesky lines, gives your skin a youthful, juicy glow, and leaves you with a smoother complexion.

Hyaluronic acid is the ultimate superhero ingredient, and it’s popping up everywhere – from moisturizers and cleansers to lipstick and eyeshadow. They call it a nemesis to dry skin!

And The Ordinary’s hyaluronic acid is popular just for that – it packs a serious hydration punch, has a light-as-a-feather texture, and is super budget-friendly.

What does it claim to be?

• It boasts a blend of low, medium, and high molecular-weight hyaluronic acid and a hyaluronic acid crosspolymer for ultra-hydrating benefits.
• It helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
• The product also claims to be suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

What claims are true?

Honestly, the claims are not too huge or miraculous. But they are what hyaluronic acid is supposed to do. Simply hydrate. And for the price, I think it does the job very well.

• It provides intense hydration, which makes it perfect for people with dry skin.
• It does help slightly to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but the results are not extraordinary, and you can achieve that with any good & nourishing moisturizer.
• It suits my oily but sensitive skin type really well.

But here’s the deal: using this serum alone won’t solve all your skincare probs. You have to pair it with other products to address specific concerns like acne, wrinkles, scars or pigmentation.

How does The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid work?

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid comes in a clear liquid form that is easily absorbed by the skin. It’s got three types of HA molecules of varying weights, meaning it can hydrate from the surface down to the depths of your skin. Plus, it’s got Vitamin B5 to soothe and heal for the ultimate skin satisfaction.

What does it feel or smell like?

It’s got this sticky gel-water-like texture (like that of a normal serum) but, surprisingly, feels insanely light on the skin. It sinks right in (maybe within 20-30 seconds) and doesn’t leave any gross residue. I swear, my skin felt insanely soft and quenched.

Talking of the scent, it is absolutely 100% fragrance-free, so woohoo!!

My personal experience with The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid –

Okay, so here’s everything I love and hate about this serum.

First of all, I am an oily to combination skin type, so there really is no lack of moisture for me. But after applying any strong chemical peels or face shaving, I gotta hydrate it in the best freaking way possible.

And on some days, my skin feels so tight, cracky & stretched nothing works except a good dose of moisturization. And who doesn’t love enhancing the skin’s moisture barrier so it looks healthy and nourished, huh?

So, an affordable HA serum comes in handy. I especially loved the lightweight formula of the serum & how smoothly it applied to my skin. And it absorbs within 20-30 seconds, so it works great for a simple as well as extensive skincare routine.

After 5 weeks of using it consistently, I could see my skin started looking healthier, plumper and just happy. Call me fancy, but I always apply it over my first serum (sometimes vitamin C, sometimes niacinamide, and other times azelaic acid) to lock in everything and my skin has never felt better.

As for wrinkles or fine lines, I didn’t see a very noticeable change for two reasons. One, I don’t really have that many signs of aging, and second, it doesn’t have any specific ingredients to reverse that.

As long as you are keeping your skin well hydrated, you will delay early signs of aging. That is why dry skin types always see wrinkles appear earlier than oilier skin types. Now that’s something you didn’t know or did you? 😉

Tips on using The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid

I have a whole post on how to use hyaluronic acid correctly, but here’s the gist of it –

• Always, always, always use it on damp skin. Not wet, not dry, but damp.
• You can also layer other skincare products on top of it, such as moisturizer, facial oil or sunscreen.
• It’s safe to use both morning and night, but if you have sensitive skin, you may want to start by using it once a day and gradually work up to twice daily use.
• You must use a moisturizer over HA serum every time.

Can The Ordinary hyaluronic acid be used every day?

Of course, darling! You can and should use hyaluronic acid every day on your skin to get effective results in a small span of time. It is a skin-friendly ingredient and enhances your overall skin when used on a regular basis. 

How long does The Ordinary hyaluronic acid take to work?

While results may vary from person to person, I started noticing plumper skin and a healthy skin barrier after 10-15 days of using it consistently. As with anything good in life, you gotta stick with it to see the best results.

Does hyaluronic acid lighten skin?

Hyaluronic acid is NOT going to make you go from Snow White to Dopey in one fell swoop. But it can help brighten your complexion and improve overall skin tone. Hyaluronic acid works by plumping up your skin with hydration, which can make it look more radiant and less dull.

So while it may not directly lighten your skin, it can give you a glow that makes your skin look brighter and more even.

Can you leave hyaluronic acid on overnight?

Yes, you can and you must leave hyaluronic acid on overnight. Not only will it deeply hydrate your skin, but it will also make you wake up feeling like a quenched goddess. Just imagine waking up to plump, hydrated, and glowing skin every morning.

What not to mix with hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is such a sweet and simple ingredient that occurs naturally in your skin which is why it works great with almost every other ingredient. Be it AHA, BHA, retinol, niacinamide or vitamin C, you can layer hyaluronic acid safely with them.

Although I would ask you to be careful of mixing them in one concoction, you can layer them after a gap of 1-2 minutes or use them on alternate times or days very safely.

Coming to the ingredients of The Ordinary hyaluronic acid serum, I must tell you that I am a huge fan of it also because of its gentle, irritation-free ingredients. It has absolutely no irritants and a lot of goodie ingredients.
