What to use before the ordinary peeling solution?

What to Use after the Ordinary Peeling Solution? (Answers to All Your Questions)

You just need to do a few things before applying this peeling solution.

Step 1: Cleanse your face with a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser to remove any makeup, dirt, or excess oil on the skin. You don’t want anything to interfere and react with the strong ingredients of the product.

I use Cetaphil’s gentle cleanser for oily skin when applying The Ordinary’s chemical peel. It has extremely simple ingredients and is hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic, so there’s not much to worry about.

Step 2: Pat dry the face nicely. Don’t rub the towel harshly to create any sort of friction or cause rashes. Allow the skin to dry itself completely. Even a little water on the skin can cause excessive irritation after.

What to use after the ordinary peeling solution?

Aftercare is the most important thing to keep in check after using this or any chemical peel. First, you must burst the skin with the hydration and nourishment it deserves. Any hydrating serum or moisturizer will work to repair and strengthen the skin barrier.

NO ACTIVES, NOTHING. No niacinamide, glycolic acid, lctic acid, vitamin C. You must only use a really hydrating moisturizer after The Ordinary peeling solution, if you don’t want your skin to react adversely.

Next, strictly use sunscreen with a broad spectrum right after removing the peel and for a week afterward.

This product, like any other exfoliating product, has the potential to make your skin more sensitive to the sun. It additionally contains an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and a beta hydroxy acid (BHA), which may lead to greater sun sensitivity in your skin, particularly the risk of sunburn.

Use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and limit sun exposure while using this product and for a week afterward.

Some of my top recommendations for hydrating serums are:

1. Neutrogena hydro boost hyaluronic acid serum

One of my favorite moisturizers ever, this is perfect for any skin type. It absorbs quickly like a gel but provides the long-lasting and intense moisturizing power of a cream. Also, it doesn’t make your skin appear oily or anything, in fact, it is oil-free, non-comedogenic, fragrance-, and dye-free.

I love CeraVe for its ceramides-rich products. This CeraVe moisturizer with SPF is a hydrating facial lotion that spreads easily, is absorbed quickly, and has a non-greasy finish. It contains Hyaluronic Acid to retain skin moisture and Niacinamide to help calm skin.

MVE Technology delivers hydration throughout the day, which is everything you need after using The ordinary peeling solution.

8. Cetaphil Daily Hydrating Face Lotion

what to use after the ordinary peeling solution - moisturizer

Another personal favorite recommendation, Cetaphil, is one of the most gentle skincare brands that does what it says without many ingredients. It instantly hydrates and locks in moisture for 24 hours to protect skin from dryness caused by the chemical peel. It is a fast-absorbing, lightweight, non-greasy formula that would suit combinations of sensitive skin types the most.

There are only 2-3 sunscreens that I switch among. And all I can say is, they are the best!

The second most important step for what to use after the ordinary peeling solution has to be a good amount of sunscreen after hydration.

One of the common questions about sunscreens is how much of it to use. I prefer three full fingers of sunscreen for the face.

9. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch sunscreen

This lightweight sunscreen is fast-absorbing and has a dry-touch technology for a non-greasy, matte finish. It is formulated with Helioplex for superior sun protection for your skin. From the dermatologist-recommended suncare brand, this SPF 70 sunscreen helps defend against sun signs and decreases the risk of skin cancer without causing acne.

10. EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 Face Sunscreen

Another dermatologically recommended sunscreen, especially for sensitive skin, is this one. It is amazing, has a sheer, lightweight, and oil-free texture, broad spectrum, and contains key ingredients that promote the appearance of healthy-looking skin. I switch between this and Neaytrogena one often.

11. Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen

what to use after the ordinary peeling solution - sunscreen

I don’t often stick to expensive sunscreens, but this one is a game-changer. It is a totally invisible, weightless, scentless formula that provides oil-free sunscreen protection for all skin types, tones, & lifestyles.

This feel-good, antioxidant-rich facial sunscreen glides onto the skin, providing shine control & leaving a velvety finish. It is more than just a sunscreen which is why I love it for applying after using The ordinary peeling solution.

What not to use after the ordinary peeling solution?

Undoubtedly, The ordinary peeling solution is a lot more powerful due to its high exfoliating acid contents, so there are some skincare ingredients you must avoid like Vitamin C, retinol or retinoids, niacinamide, or anything with potent actives – AHAs or BHAs like lactic acids if you don’t want to aggravate the skin irritation.

How often to use the ordinary peeling solution?

Ideally, once a week is more than enough, but if you know how to play with this peeling solution and are an advanced user, you can switch it up to twice a week. The ordinary recommends twice a week but don’t listen to them just like that. Determine how your skin reacts to this solution first.

Also, it would be better if you do the patch test prior to using it in the first place to see if there are any allergic reactions. If you’re dealing with uncomfortable redness that doesn’t go away within an hour or excessive peeling, consider reducing the usage and the time duration of it.

    1. Hii Silver, you can start using retinol in your 20s, probably around the age of 24. But as for the other actives like glycolic acid, salicylic or alpha arbutin, you can start using them in your late teenage years, around 18 or so.

    1. Nooooo, please don’t do that. If you’re using the peel for the first time, skip everything and only use a NICE moisturizer. If you’ve done it quite a lot of times and your skin has settled according to it, after waiting for about 10-15 minutes, you can go in with a nice hydrating serum like alpha arbutin, hyaluronic acid or niacinamide. Considering, if you don’t have a sensitive skin type.

  1. The La Roche-Posay moisturizer you recommended for using right after the peel has niacinamide listed as an active ingredient. But you also warn NOT to use anything with that ingredient following the peel as it can irritate the the skin. Can you please clarify?

    1. Hello Celia, absolutely, it’s safe to use that moisturizer. The active ingredients it contains are in a gentle and safe amount, making it suitable even after a strong peel without being harsh on the skin. If your skin isn’t particularly sensitive, you can also apply a niacinamide serum directly after about 20 minutes. However, it’s important to note that this may not be advisable for everyone, so it’s always a good idea to assess your skin’s individual needs and tolerance.

    2. Hello. I really appreciate your article you’re awesome. I’ve been looking for an article on whether to use cerave AM facial moisturizing lotion after using the ordinary peeling solution. Thanks for clarifying but wouldn’t the niacinamide in the cerave affect my skin after peeling? How long should I wait to apply cerave after peeling? Also, whenever I use the ordinary alpha arbutin or niacinamide with zinc, can I still use the cerave moisturizing lotion after? I’ll appreciate you rrepsonse. Thanks.

      1. Hii beautyy, yes you can absolutely use CeraVe lotion after the peel. Moisturizer like this have a lot less active niacinamide than the serums, so they are absolutely safe. Though, you’ll want to avoid direct serums anyways after using The Ordinary peel.

And yes, you can safely use alpha arbutin (my fav fav serum) and niacinamide before CeraVe lotion. They jell well nicely. Just make sure, you allow the serums to dry a bit, as to avoid any instant reactions.
